Qasr al-Saghah Desert 6593EG07JHP Egyptian Western Desert Scenery Sand Barren Egypt Qasr el-Siba near a small late 12th century Egyptian worker's temple, unfinished and uninscribed at Qasr al-Saghah near the Gebel el-Qatrani worker’s town servicing the basalt mines to the west of Lake Qarun and accessible only by 4x4 on specialist tours of Egypt. It is constructed of dark brown calciferous sandstone with seven cult shrines facing a common offering table room with the probable front of the temple never finished. This photo is taken near the temple and shows the bleak and desolate desert landscape that surrounds its location. Donside Farmland vbn1143jhp Donside River Don Farmland Aberdeenshire Scottish autumn sheep rolling rural scenery on an attractive part of Upper Donside between the Muir of Fowlis and Milltown of Kildrummy looking across the farmland by the River Don just past Cairncoullie Farm and the junction above the Mill of Brux. This is one shortcut I use, passing Cushnie Forest, passing Elphhillock and Hillockhead on the Chapel of Towie Road and then cutting across to Mill of Brux to cross the River Don to reach Milltown of Kildrummy. I use this cross country route when heading northwards to Huntly from Torphins/Lumphanan, passing Craigievar Castle and then heading towards Donside from the Muir of Fowlis instead of heading for Alford and joining the Huntly road at Mossat. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. There is a salmon ladder but the main excitement is watching the fish climbing up the naturally created rapids seeking their spawning beds further up river. The church and the area where originally called Aberchirder and the congregation were the catalyst for the Disruption of 1834, a major schism in the Scottish Church of the time.
