Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

Aurora Borealis Scotland October 1991 Proton burst corona zenith rays treetops pink red green Inchmarlo Deeside Aberdeenshire taken in the early morning around 00.45hrs BST on 2nd October 1991 at Inchmarlo near Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen looking to the north. An active display and this photo was one of three taken on a journey back from delivering prints for the Deeside Piper in Banchory. This session was a continuation of activity during the evening/night of the 1st October which had started around 21.00hrs BST. I had spotted activity over Torphins and the Hill of Fare on the way to Banchory via Sluie where I saw rays above the forest. Returning from Banchory I saw a strong single beam or ray going straight up over Inchmarlo so pulled off the road at the rough layby just by the speed zone west of Inchmarlo beyond the Craiglash Road. Suddenly this large coronal zenith appeared, swirling around the vortex and lasted long enough for me to take the last three exposures left on the film and then it faded as quickly as it appeared. It has been suggested as being a proton burst which would relate to the single large beam that preceded it. Later activity was photographed after I returned to Crooktree around 01.00hrs BST. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2 and usually 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds.

Karnak Temple storage rescued carving restoration hieroglyphics rough nu niwt located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the eighth and tenth pylons and the boundaries of Khonsu temple in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum.

Hypostyle Hall Karnak Egyptian columns undressed Window small court pylon third inside this famous site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. The most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun is the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today greatly lacking in perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from the small court adjacent to the Third Pylon of Amenhotep 111 to the east of the Hypostyle Hall. Note the unfinished columns where the construction methods are clearly visible where the small building blocks have not been dressed smooth.

Temple Merneptah Egypt Luxor Exterior Block Carving Horus Wing Cartouche remains of mortuary site for a Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum.

Tanis Temple Amun Obelisk Smooth Deepcut Hieroglyphs Photo Egyptian Skill Delta site Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Picardy Pictish Symbol Stone Incised Carved Ancient Scottish Pillar Insch Aberdeenshire dates from the 6/7th century AD and stands in a field off minor road to Largie near Insch in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland. A rough whinstone pillar with three finely incised prehistoric Pictish symbols of double disc and Z-rod, coiled serpent and simple mirror. It is apparently in its original position; near a burial and in view of the nearby hill fort of Dunnideer.

Dess Burn waterfall Sloc falls rocks trees springtime Scotland water Aberdeenshire located by the Dess Road, heading north from the North Deeside Road after leaving Kincardine O’Neil going west towards Aboyne. The Dess burn creates this delightful small waterfall known as the Sloc O'Dess best viewed from the roadside layby but ideal view at water level is inaccessible except to those willing to scramble up a steep rocky gorge side although a recent set of hand rails and some rough steps have made access to the lower viewpoint much easier. A constructed viewpoint on the eastern bank is reached by a long walk from the North Deeside Road. The falls are now near a recently constructed section of the Deeside Way, a walk and cycle track going from Aberdeen to Ballater, loosely following the old Deeside Railway line.

A constructed viewpoint on the eastern bank is reached by a long walk from the North Deeside Road. The falls are now near a recently constructed section of the Deeside Way, a walk and cycle track going from Aberdeen to Ballater, loosely following the old Deeside Railway line.

This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on.

Balnacraig Viaduct 1087 Deeside Railway Line Torphins Lumphanan Aberdeenshire Scotland demolished in 1989 by British Rail on safety grounds and was the last of old relics of the Deeside Line that ran between Aberdeen and Ballater. It was built in 1857-9 by engineer John Willet on the Aboyne Extension from Banchory and was later part of the Ballater branch line, the Royal Deeside Line of the Great North Scotland Railway.

Known also as the Sundayswells, Torphins and Lumphanan Viaducts it crossed the Beltie Burn at the Tornaveen junction off the A980 and remnants of the railway line embankments can still be seen. National Grid reference is 60690332. This photo was taken 8th April 1989.

Structural details are noted in the keywords. An attempt was made to save the viaduct but sufficient funds could not be raised to maintain it and it was eventually demolished in June of 1989. Many of these photos were taken while I covered the story for the local newspaper the Deeside Piper and are taken from 35mm and 645 transparency film of varying quality so the quality is not always of the best.

Inchtuthil Roman Camp garrison archaeology Perthshire Scottish farmland plateau was the largest and longest used military garrison in Scotland during the occupation by the Romans locateed near the River Tay. Reached along a rough farm road from where the B947 joins the A984 Dunkeld road. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. Forest Birse Feughside hills Peter Luther Moss silver birches pasture rough summer cloudy Deeside Scotland is a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. At the western end of the public road is a small church where the road then enters a shooting estate but has a public track to The Fungle, eventually Birsemore and Aboyne or heading westwards to pick up the Firmounth heading either for Mount Keen or Tarfside or swinging north for Glen Tanar.. Not long after leaving the public road heading for the Fungle it is possible to see Birse Castle on your right.
