This gallery has photographs of the main sites North of Cairo, usually visited privately as not part of most Egyptian tours, and includes Heliopolis, Tell Basta near Zagazig and Tanis near the north coast of Egypt
Alexandria Carved Cross eg9613729jhp Egypt Alexandria garden exhibit carved stone Coptic cross early Christian capital Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. St Cyrus Beach zxc5226jhp St Cyrus Cliffs northwards seats viewpoint Autumn North Sea Aberdeenshire Scotland is on the southern most boundary of Aberdeenshire just north of Montrose and at the estuary of the North Esk river. A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Early Cross Banchory TO1780029jhp Banchory town early Christian cross carved granite inset watch tower Kincardineshire Royal Deeside Scotland is located on the side of the Historic Watch Tower in the main cemetery of this large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. Prince Wales Crossfire qwe8553jhp Fort George bastion Prince Wales entrance military base Scotland canon fortress located near Ardersier and the public access is organised by Historic Scotland although it is an active military base here a view of the south east bastion of Prince of Wales giving cover across the main front entrance to the fortress. A very large complex of moats, bastions and buildings with spectacular outlooks to the surrounding sea and countryside it is well preserved historical site and fine example of military construction and it should be as probably the most expensive military fortification built in the Britain. Completed in 1796 and in the context of Scottish history, it appears more a statement of political empowerment to thwart any ambitions of the Highlanders towards future sedition rather than dealing with any likely military threat. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle.
