Deir el-Medina EG075103jhp Deir al-Medina Luxor Egypt Ruins workers tomb shaft deep rock cut is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Alexandria Catacombs eg961407jhp Egypt Alexandria Kom es-Shogafa catacombs shelves rockcut urns flooded board walk Mediterranean is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076744jhp Egypt Abu Rawash pyramid 4th Dynasty Djedefre rockcut entrance channel hewn bedrock this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Abu Sir Drainage eg9511922jhp Egypt Abu Sir necropolis pyramid Sahure water drains drainage channel rockcut near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Tomb of Nefermerry 6885EG07JHP Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary.
