Hatshepsut Luxor EG206416jhp Hatshepsut Temple Egyptian boats oarsmen sailors sails rigging expedition Punt colours scenes soldiers which lies beneath the Upper central court which was opened again in 2002 and makes the visit to this magnificent temple almost complete except that entrance into the burial chamber itself is restricted. This colourful wall relief of the Queen is at the end of the upper terrace. In these paintings are recorded the Queen’s famous expedition to the Land of Punt, actual location unknown but it was in search of incense and myrrh which are found on both sides of the Red Sea. This was not the first time Egyptians had been to Punt. It is thought that she bought back trees that might have grown in the first two terrace courtyards. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Opposite the restaurant is the road to Auchenblae passing St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strath Finella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. In the foreground is the Black Burn of Arnbarrow and to the right is a very steep small section of road at the start of the climb up to the Cairn O’Mount which has memories for me as a child having to exit my father’s old Rover car along with my mother and relatives as it could not make it up that first little climb. No longer used for public access to opposite bank but still an attractive single arch of 70 foot height illustrating the building skills of earlier times. It is situated between the Lonach Gathering park, near Candacraig and Bellabeg with its historic Motte and the entrances to Lost and Glenbuchat in the heart of Upper Donside. Old Brig Dee Invercauld fgh2962jhp Old Brig River Dee Invercauld Deeside Scotland summer heather stormy clouds is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the summer heather purple and although catching the sunlight the background is dark and stormy. NB This was taken with a non-digital lens and may need extra sharpening. Grounds are normally open all year round. Taken from higher ground and looking over to the distinct outline of Hill of Bennachie with its vitrified Pictish fort. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. An earlier small harbour at Buckpool, dating from 1857, but rapidly became outdated and now on longer exists but the more modern Cluny harbour dating from 1880 still operates and is one of the finest on the North East Coast.
