Bridge of Don 191127jhp Aberdeen City Bridge Don River Spring Daffodils Bridge riverbank estuary to the north of the city and the road bridge over the River Don viewed over spring colour at Donmouth on the main road north of the City into North East Scotland. The Bridge of Don is a rapidly expanding area north of the River Don with the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre bringing many attractions to the City and it is adjacent to the Balgownie Golf Course which is a famous links course by the North Sea. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. Dunkeld was badly damaged during the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 was later rebuilt in the 18th Century in a much ‘planned’ style. The location has a chequered and sometime violent history certainly recorded back to Pictish times around 820AD and long association with Christianity since its fledging beginnings in Scotland. Any location by a river lying in the lee of surrounding hills probably attracted habitation even in prehistoric times. It is very busy attractive town for visitors, extremely so during summer weekends, and lies conveniently close to the A9 route between Perth and northwards via Pitlochry into the Highlands. In the summer the riverbank can be mobbed with picnickers and swimmers while it is also a popular salmon fishing stretch and the narrow turbulent water good for canoeing. This stretch of the Deeside Way has been recently completed and adds another piece to the public footpath network running from Aberdeen west along Deeside to Ballater. River Buchat from Bridge wyy6085jhp Glenbuchat River Buchat summer brown peaty water trees rural Scotland Aberdeenshire where this charming glen is accessed off the A939/A944/A97 Ballater/Huntly road just at the entrance to a Historic Scotland maintained castle by the same name. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet.
