Kom Ombo EG204328jhp Kom Ombo Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs deep cut sharp symbols seated God of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Pictures from the great Mortuary temple of Ramasses 111 called the Medinet Habu on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor

Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This photo was taken during a visit in November 1998 with a Stars and Signs Tour and is of the eastern gate, the usual point of entry for visitors. The upper chambers of this high gate were where the Pharaoh Ramesses 111 is thought to have had private rooms to retreat to, maybe with ladies of his harem, when visiting the Temple and might have been where there was an attempt on his life. It also has more modern guest houses as the one illustrated used by Egyptian author Dr Taha Hossian for instance.The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Government Ambush qwe8639jhp Scottish Highlands Culloden battlefield centre moor flat ambush government forces site of the last pitched battle fought in the British Isles in 1745 where a short bloody fight saw the decisive defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s rebel army by the loyalist Hanoverian forces under the Duke of Cumberland and which was the Stuart’s last attempt to reclaim their throne. The site near Inverness overlooking the Moray Firth has a new National Trust for Scotland visitors centre, large carpark and all facilities to cater for the many thousands who visit this important place of Scottish history every year. Best perhaps seen on a moody stormy cloud covered day to get a feeling of the sense of brooding sadness that this crucial battle had on the Highlands and its relations with the rest of Scotland and England as this was by no means just a defeat by the ‘English’. An information board at this photo view describes how the government forces ambushed the retreating Highlanders with devastating effects at this point where stone walls where breached on the battlefield. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
