A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather. Photos of the main towns and villages along the River Dee from Banchory westwards to Braemar with villages bordering the north and south sides of the river such as Torphins and Tarland to Strachan on the south.
Morrone Woods xvv1080jhp Braemar Morrone walk track birch trees hills hills Quoich Scottish June summer evening near where it overlooks the River Dee and village is a popular base for hill walking in Cairngorms as well as skiing at nearby Glenshee on the road to Perth. Some signed walks start from the carpark at the top of Chapel Brae, which starts by the entrance to the Royal Highland Gathering Park and the main track leads to the Morrone marker with lovely views over the River Dee towards the west up past Mar Lodge to the Linn of Dee and northwards to the Cairngorms. The lower slops of Morrone Birkwood Nature Reserve are famous for the extensive covering of silver birch trees here looking northwards to Quoich with hills of Carn na Drochaide, Carn Dearg and carn na Criche off to the right. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. Loch Kinord Islands TO813011jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scotland viewpoint crannog island prehistoric manmade Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken. There are two islands, one had a Castle constructed on it while the other is a Crannog, a prehistoric man made island. Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. This photograph was taken in 2004 using my first digital SLR, a Fuji S2 Pro with telephoto lens. Loch Kinord Islands TO813010jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scottish Burn O’Vat viewpoint islands castle crannog prehistoric lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken.
