Karnak Ram Sphinxes EG075077jhp Karnak Temple Egypt Entrance Exit Avenue Rows First Pylon Crio-sphinxes located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. The entrance into Karnak is between the two rows of sphinxes but leaving the site you come round the back of the nearest row to the main coachpark. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Parts of the previous setting for the house have gone such as the lovely pool from which the sculpture has been kept although greatly lacking in its previous style. The new buildings surrounding this Square offer interesting windows on the College and the Town House. At the time of taking this photo construction work is still ongoing especially in the front of Marischal College pedestrian area. The park has completed a major facelift bringing it back to the original Victorian layout and the replacement of the famous Rose Mound by this Victorian flagpole mound is one of the most striking if not extreme changes. Linn of Dee xcv7993jhp Linn Dee Bridge opening plaque Victoria Deeside Glen Aberdeenshire Scotland dramatic dangerous bridge is as far west as the metal road goes in Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl or doubling back taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and as far as the new National Trust for Scotland carpark. Bridge opened in September 1957 although the last digit is missing off the bridge, replacing a wooden one constructed in 1830; before that a mere plank of wood to cross by.
