Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora-Borealis-wsc5053jhp Northern Lights Scotland February winter green display Torphins Grampian Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 26th February, 2023 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, at 21.57hrsUT and was indicated by the magnetometer readings on AuroraWatch. Viewed over Torphins village to the East the display is on the wane and the red has disappeared leaving patches of green activity. Although cloud was forecast earlier the relatively low grade display happened before the cloud arrived. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm-70mm Tokina SD F3.5 lens at f5.6 aperture at 28mm focal length, ISO setting of 3200 for 6 seconds. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Rekhmire Tomb Painting EG075688JHP Rekhmire Tomb Painting Vizier Wife Offering Interior Photo Luxor Egypt, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Rekhmire Tomb-Chapel [Tomb 100] was a Vizier during the reigns of Tuthmosis 11 and Amenhotep 11, part of a family with long service as administrators at Thebes. This highly decorated cruciform tomb is full images giving great understanding of Egyptian foreign policy, taxation and the justice system. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512210jhp Egypt Abu Sir mastaba tomb Ptahshepses King neuserre relative carved reliefs figure roof supports near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (open collection)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Luxor Tomb EG942813jhp Egypt Egyptian Luxor Tutankhamun Theban hill mountain Valley King Tomb entrance stairs looking into one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation and this one if the most famous. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. This was taken the evening of the fullest moon-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. Corse Castle Scotland asd5315jhp Corse O'Neil Castle tower looking up inside sky interior ruined height is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photograph shows inside view up the relatively intact SE tower but basic structure is a shell. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. This particular image shows exaggerated converging verticals because of the closeness of the lens and despite it being an ultra wide focal length for given the situation of the castle to steep slopes it is not possible to get far enough away. The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale. Crathes Castle Snow TO3136084JHP Crathes Castle Snow Scenery Topiary Winter White Deeside Scottish Photo which is relatively rare these days as heavy snow falls seem to be a thing of the past but this adds a special attraction to this beautiful National Trust for Scotland property near Banchory on Royal Deeside to the west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Please contact their Edinburgh Head Office at Wemyss House, 28 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4ET. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. The Spital is also the starting off point for the walk to Lochnagar Mountain via the Gelder and Saddle.
