Through the work of the SCA the old houses of this area are being demolished and the modern occupants are be rehoused on new houses. After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank. Alexandria Railway Station eg9614115jhp Egypt Egyptian Alexandria city railway station Misr Masr oldest stylish modern Mediterranean coast city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. This photo is of the Abu al Abbas el Mursi Mosque in the Anfoushi district and the current form is from a refurbishment in 1945 by King Farouq and became the centre of Mosque Square, although built 1775 over the tomb a Spanish scholar and saint of the same name. Its current style is very much in the Arabian style popular when the Saint came to Egypt in the 13th Century. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Pharaonic, Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. Parts of the previous setting for the house have gone such as the lovely pool from which the sculpture has been kept although greatly lacking in its previous style. The new buildings surrounding this Square offer interesting windows on the College and the Town House. At the time of taking this photo construction work is still ongoing especially in the front of Marischal College pedestrian area. Ballater Refurbished Station qax2473jhp Ballater Old Station summer sunny finished rebuilt fire destroyed Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire town which is some 40 miles west of Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland. These photos taken in June 2018 show the completed reconstruction following the disastrous fire during the week of 10th May 2015 which all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. Braemar-Castle-qax8460jhp Braemar Castle fort autumn rainbow wintry larch trees Royal Deeside Scottish was built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. The sign in the foreground is a message of hope that the Corona Virus pandemic will be beaten. The photo was taken by luck on 21st November, 2020 at around 11.20UT. As a private property now in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle is accessible for exterior viewing all year round with easy parking at nearby carpark but the interiors during summer months at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
