The building silhouetted is the Dome of the Wind, the Qubbet el-Hawwa, resting place of a Muslim Sidi Ali. This may need extra sharpening as taken on a tripod and was a time exposure but there would have been some movement from the boat on the water or engine vibrations. Aswan Nile Boat Trip EG052841jhp Egypt Aswan river Nile motorboat reeds close scary tourists passengers Nubian village excursion and part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village but passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat. Aswan West Bank Tombs EG052746JHP Modern Egypt Aswan River Nile Feluccas Qubbat al-Hawa Tomb Chapels passed on trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. Visits to the Tomb- chapels are usually privately organised but easily made via the southern public ferry from the eastbank although there is steep climb from the shore to the rock cut tombs of Ancient Egyptian Nobles and Governors. These felucca sailing boats are berthered around one of the small reed covered islands in the Nile near the northern entrance to Aswan with an old abandoned ferryboat rotting in the background. Karnak Chapel Rouge EG074887jhp Luxor Karnak Egypt Hatshepsut Chapelle Rouge ithyphallic Min carving pair defaced has been partially restored in addition to other small but beautiful chapels and temples in the Open Air Museum, a quiet and contemplative extra to the north east of the main Karnak complex. This is recent major reconstruction situated in the Open Air Museum at Karnak with rescued blocks from the original barque Chapel built by the Pharaoh Hatshepsut and possibly originally cited between her obelisks in the centre of the temple of Amun. The partial reconstruction offers an insight to the beauty and grace of such a building destroyed because of the backlash against her ruling as a ‘male’ King. Rescued blocks were found inside other buildings around the site. Karnak is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. Kom Ombo EG204330jhp Kom Ombo museum blocks Egypt hieroglyphics many symbols sharp carvings of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Merneptah Sacred Lake EG051919JHP Ancient Egypt Temple Merneptah Sacred Lake Luxor New Site Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Loch Kinord Islands TO813011jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scotland viewpoint crannog island prehistoric manmade Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken. There are two islands, one had a Castle constructed on it while the other is a Crannog, a prehistoric man made island. Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. This photograph was taken in 2004 using my first digital SLR, a Fuji S2 Pro with telephoto lens. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Aboyne is a popular tourist stopover with shops, restaurants, hotels and two golf courses is busy throughout the summer months with long established Highland Games and a recent and very successful Arts Festival based around a thriving Community Centre and Theatre. Crossing the River takes you onto the South Deeside Road, either east to Potarch turn or on through Ballogie, over Corsedardar to Finzean and Feughside. Westwards takes you via the Bridge of Ess and passed the Glen Tanar entrance to Dinnet and onto Ballater. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
