The journey through the back streets, military zones and industrial sites was fascinating enough but even the taxi driver had to ask twice for directions. It was eventually not that far from a so-called sculpture park that I had ‘discovered’ the previous year on the same search but failed to find the colossus. There are other quarries and two in the Southern Quarry area of which Tlaina has this unfinished colossus, another statue is at Shallal Quarry while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. It is thought that a fracture in the shoulder of this statue of Ramses 11 might be why it was abandoned and further down the hill an unfinished square base has also been found as well as evidence of a ramp or track way that was being prepared for its transportation when completed. The famous unfinished obelisk is the most interesting because of its sheer scale, if completed it would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur and for the blocks of pink granite to be removed. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies or channels with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred at the very far end. Edfu Temple New Approach EG052171JHP Ancient Egyptian Edfu Temple Pylon New Ramp Steps Entrance Morning viewed from the south and the remains of the mammisi or birth house just visible from the modern approach to this ancient monument located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karnak Temple SS98469jhp Karnak Temple Pylon Courtyard Mudbrick Ramps Egypt morning light back first is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are the remains of construction mudbrick ramps in the first court behind the first pylon, which appear to have been left behind. The temple complex started from the centre and this area of construction, partly unfinished, was a much later phase possibly during the reign of Nectanebo 1 around 370BC. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. Karnak Amenhotep 11 Temple EG075038jhp Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1. Karnak Unfinished Stele EG074857jhp Karnak Temple Egypt First Forecourt stele unfinished Amun plumed headdress by the remains of building ramps on the inside of the unfinished pylon entered from the west and this huge complex is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. Sebua Osiride Statues JHPEG051719 Egypt Temple Lake Nasser es-Sebua al-Sabu Statues Osiride Ramses Court is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat. Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512010jhp Egypt Egyptian Abu Sir necropolis pyramid Sahure columns mortuary temple near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Saqqara Tomb of Ti 6861EG07JHP Ancient Egyptian Saqqara Mastaba Tomb Ti Entrance Ramp Portico Columns, overseer for the building of Sun Temples at nearby Abusir for the Pharaohs Neferikare and Niuserre of the 5th Dynasty c 2498-2345BC, is on the far edge of the north Saqqara necropolis and is reached by a walk past statues of three Greek Philosophers and this photo is of the immediate entrance after the walk down a passageway. It is fine example of the later style of the evolution of the mastaba tomb with a pillared portico, courtyard, burial shaft and a room with Ti’s replica statue viewed through a hole in similar fashion to the serdab of King Doser by the Step Pyramid. It has a small caravan park in the next easterly bay to the harbour and with traditional 17th century period is an important part of the Coastal Trail and the history of the early fishing industry in the North east of Scotland.
