Aurora over Scotland (6 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora & Aircraft au7410ajhp Scottish Aurora Borealis Neuk rays red winter aircraft lights clouds January 1990 taken on the Harestone Road to the west of Banchory at a small inset into a field by The Neuk farm. I cleared it with the farmer that I could park there and it gave me a clear view to the Hill of Fare to the North of Banchory. Other photos were taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and a tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo taken on the 24th of January around 21.30hrsUT of another passing commercial aircraft leaving Aberdeen is one of the early 1990, four nights before the end of the month, displays which proved to be an extremely productive decade for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using Kodak 400asa 5020 EES 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa, push processed, and exposed around the 20 seconds I later settled on. These locations became my usual choices for most of the Aurora displays I photographed when living in Banchory throughout the early 90’s, as easily accessible from Banchory and with a clear light pollution free view to the North which meant that any clear night was spent watching the Northern skies for the tell-tale signs of a possible display, usually proceeded by an area of obvious brightness on the evening before the main display. It also gave easy access to Crathes Castle which featured a couple of times as different foreground to Aurora displays. Aurora & Aircraft rty1929jhp Aurora Borealis photo aircraft lights Scottish green rays clouds Aberdeenshire taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Looking to magentic North with multiple rays just visible behind a thickening cloud bank at 00.27.33hrs UT [01.27.33BST] with an exposure of 15 secs. An aircraft strobe lights are visible by the left hand copse of trees and a large flaming ray base over Torphins, the street lights on the right. The strobe lights on a passing aircraft taking off from Aberdeen airport and heading south over Torphins village adds to the large oxygen green arc as small rays start to break on the left around magnetic north. Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Graffiti eg075563jhp Dendara Temple interior coloured reliefs graffiti painted Hathor ancient Egyptian, north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of colored reliefs and early graffiti desceration on the inside of the hypostyle hall with some remains of original colours. There are also representations on the outer and inner facades of the Roman Pharoahs Claudius, Nero,Tiberius and Augustus with the Egyptian Gods Horus, Hathor whose face adorns the capitals of the coloumns. Delta Town Traffic EG057146JHP Modern Egypt Delta Town Street Houses Traffic Cars Taxi Lorries in the area near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built for its Bubastis Temple Site which still remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages these sorts of town images are part of a private trip into the northern areas of Egypt part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. The Lecht ski centre is also one of the busiest centres on the south side of the Cairngorms during Scotland’s often ill-defined and variable winter season but during the summer months is a favourite route with the famous humpbacked single track bridge at Gairnsheil, the purple flowering heather moorland between there and Cock Bridge, past Corgarff Castle and then after Tomintoul, the Bridge of Brown, after passing through Glen Avon.
