Aswan Nubian Seated Statue EG052918JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum seated Menthuhotep-Aa, beloved of Satis, Lady of Elephantine, a quartzite statue from the First Intermediate period and an exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Luxor Hatshepsut Obelisks EG962093JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Exhibit Carved Block Hatshepsut Obelisks Karnak Amun was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit shows the Queen on the left and Amun on the right with two standing obelisks at Karnak one of which still stands and is similiar to blocks now in the reconstructed Chaple Rouge while this one is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. This photo was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076731jhp Egypt Abu Roash pyramid 4th Dynasty Djedefre mortuary temple funerary restoration this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Hawara Shaft Tomb eg941415jhp Ancient Egyptian Hawara Pyramid Fayyum Amenemhet royal tomb shafts oblong deep, at a site well to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994.
