Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days.

Lake Qarun Fayoum Egypt Ancient Ptolemaic Town Soknopaiou Nesos highview, also called Dimyah al-Siba, a Ptolemaic town dating through to Roman times built by with a substantial mudbrick enclosure wall partially buried surrounding the remains of a temple dedicated to Soknopaios, a form of the crocodile God Sobek. It is located in the western desert south of Cairo and is accessed by 4x4 from Faiyum and is often part of a desert trip including Qasr al-Saghah Temple. In this photo a group of archaeologists are inspecting the causeway on what was once thought to have been an island in the lake.

Giza Egypt Khafre Pyramid limestone mastaba tomb infra red B&W film, an area that lies roughly between the causeway of Menkaure and that of Khafre in which there are many old mastabas and rock cut tombs, some open to the public such as Debhen or Iwn-min and the most prominent of which is the Mastaba of Queen Khentkawes the last major Royal construction in the Giza complex. It is an area left to the individual to explore and has an eerie feel wandering amongst some grotesque eroded faces of limestone showing the natural damage that centuries of wind and blown sand can do to unprotected soft limestone. To the western boundary of this area is a large bluff with the modern Muslim cemetery beneath it. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins.

Saqqara Unas carvings reliefs ancient Egyptian mastaba sunken hieroglyphics buried that remain alongside the restored causeway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits but there are also some sunken half buried tomb entrances such as this. A photo from 2011 on the Internet shows that is has been cleared now for safe access but I cannot determine who it was for.

Ancient Egyptian Saqqarah Tomb Two Brothers Gay Close Painted Relief recently found under the causeway as this photo illustrates from the Pyramid of Unas to his Valley Temple down the escarpment and adjacent to the entrance to the necropolis at Saqqara. An £LE20 extra at the ticket office on arrival at the main entry point for the Step Pyramid complex. It was worth the effort as the custodian who took me to this interesting recently discovered tomb and was also very knowledgeable about the whole site. Saqqara has a new ticket office and excellent modern museum which did allow non-flash photography.

Tomb Two Brothers Recently Under Unas Causeway Saqqara Egypt Excavation as this photo illustrates from the Pyramid of Unas to his Valley Temple down the escarpment and adjacent to the entrance to the necropolis at Saqqara. An £LE20 extra at the ticket office on arrival at the main entry point for the Step Pyramid complex. It was worth the effort as the custodian who took me to this interesting recently discovered tomb and was also very knowledgeable about the whole site. Saqqara has a new ticket office and excellent modern museum which did allow non-flash photography.

Saqqara Tomb of Nefermerry 6885EG07JHP
Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary.
