Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days. Hawara Shaft Tomb eg941413jhp Egypt Hawara Pyramid mudbrick Faiyum Amenemhet tomb shafts roadside necropolis on a site well south of Cairo in the al Fayyum province was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. New Byth bnm2891jhp New Byth village Buchan Aberdeenshire Scottish May spring rolling fields seeded near Cuminestown was built around the late 1700’s as part of a process by the landowners to support the increased agriculture of this northern area of Aberdeenshire. The Buchan province whose name means “land at the bend in the ocean” was underdeveloped but was developed as part of the enlightenment as landowners sought to improve their estates and the overall agriculture of the land. Nearby Cuminestown was one of the first founded in 1761 by Joseph Cumine and New Byth followed soon afterwards and later followed by other Central Buchan villages like Maud, Mintlaw and New Deer. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored.
