Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Coffin Interior Detail EG011210aJHP Egyptian Museum coffin interior treasury scribe illustrate elaborate colourful craftsmanship from the ancient Egyptians. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Temple Sandstorm EG0214013jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel gate sandstorm dramatic light hypostyle palms hazy which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Avery seldom frequented area so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Khonsu Pylon EG075032jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Khonsu Pinedjem Pylon entrance Ramesside columns bases located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is taken from the entrance in front of the pylon of the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The pylon was later decorated in place by the High Priest Pinedjem, later a King and the columned court inside is attributed to the King Herihor. This photograph is near the four papyrus bud columns on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. Karnak Papyrus Columns EG074956jhp Karnak Temple Egypt Festival Hall Thutmosis Colonnade papyrus bud columns near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph of these four papyrus bud columns is on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. Karnak Carved Wall EG074995jhp Court Pylons Wall Reliefs Karnak Temple doorway eighth pylon Roy-Rome priests on the walls in the Court between the seventh and eighth pylons around the doorway into the staircase on the east wing of the Eighth Pylon. On the door lintel are mirror versions of the same person, Roy-Rome, a long serving High Priest to Amun with arms raised in praise but to where a cartouche, now hacked out, would have been. The figures on the right are two priests in linen robes, one of Roy-Rome, the other his son Beknekhonsu offering praise is an extensive area of text which refers to Seti 11. Luxor New Sphinxes Avenue 5626EG07JHP Luxor Egypt Shinxes Avenue Karnak Recent Excavations Walk Upright Photo have started on the remains of covered part of the Luxor to Karnak avenue of sphinxes and by 2007 over sixty had been uncovered. They appeared to have been deliberately toppled in late Roman times and have been well preserved and many Roman relayed antiquities and buildings have been identified. Remains of an ancient stone road have also been found and a stela indicating the importance of a High Priest of Amun Ra called Bakenkhonsu which has also indicated new dating evidence for the reign of the Pharaoh Sethnakhte [Setnakhte] who ruled between Ramesses 11 and 111 for now it appears four years at least. Luxor Sobek Stele EG962098JHP Egyptian Museum Luxor Stele Stela Sobek Ima Tree Pia Worship Priest was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit was found at Dahamsha at the Sawahel Armant Canal in 1967 and includes the Priest Pia and his son, wife and mother offering to the Crocodile God Sobek and it is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Sehel Island, Seheil Island on the River Nile amongst the cataracts near Aswan has a real Nubian village walked through to reach the large quantity of rock carvings on the boulder strewn island many of which are included in these photographs
Seheil Rock Carvings EG052639JHP Seheil Island Rock Carvings Ancient Egypt Nobles Events Recorded Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before.
