It is thought at Maidum pyramid was the first smooth sided success evolving the Step Pyramid design from Saqqara. Now held to be started by Huni, last King of the 3rd Dynasty and completed by his son Sneferu so dating from around 2600BC. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza. El Lisht Camel Train eg00727jhp Lisht village Egyptian life camels transporting palm fronds street scene was spotted driving through the village enroute to the two Lisht pyramids of Amenemhet and Senwsoret on the desert escarpment south of a trip from visiting the Dashur necropolis. Definitely need a great taxi driver who can navigate his way to these outlying sites, finding the local custodian and also managing not to get bogged down in the sand once away from the plantations. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Cairn O Mount Heather fgh2190jhp Cairn O’Mount Aberdeenshire heather hills rocky forest plantations summer Scottish estate taken from the roadside on this busy and popular road from Banchory on Royal Deeside near the summit of the Cairn O’Mount hill before descending past the Clatterin Brig to Fettercairn, the Mearns and main route south to Dundee and Perth. Clachnaben is the distinctive hill with its prominent tor outcrop of rock is visible from much of lower Deeside and overlooking the road winding through the larch forest of Glen Dye Estate before reaching the single track Spital Bridge the bane of many a lorry and coach drivers life. The photograph shows young new plantations to north which caused much controversy at the time of planting becuase of the possible destruction of the habitat of wildlife especially hen harriers. The hill lies between Kincardine O’Neil and Torphins, a pleasant cross-country route with wonderful views of Deeside from Clachnaben, Lochnagar and Morven. It used to be possible to see Craigendarroch and the Pass of Ballater but a small forest plantation has blocked that view. We are looking northwards past the aspens over Stranduff towards the area of Mar.
