Karnak Khonsu Pylon EG075032jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Khonsu Pinedjem Pylon entrance Ramesside columns bases located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is taken from the entrance in front of the pylon of the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The pylon was later decorated in place by the High Priest Pinedjem, later a King and the columned court inside is attributed to the King Herihor. Karnak Khonsu Opet Temple EG075025jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Khonsu Opet Apet Ptolemaic Amun Osiris cult located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The nicely decorated Temple of Opet or Apet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing and is located on the SE corner of the main Khonsu was mainly a Ptolemaic Temple and in practice dedicated to Amun who had by this time assumed much of the characteristics of Osiris. Like Khonsu itself is is well preserved, usually not very busy and a delightful escape from the crowded areas around the main Karnak site.
