The Tomb is occasionally open but usually a visit entails a climb by steps and apart from a close view of this beautiful building offers wonderful view over Aswan and the River Nile. Entered by a wrought iron spiral staircase down a vertical shaft of some 20-25mm depth, three tombs are entered by small horizontal shafts. One tomb that of Psamtik, a royal chief physician still has an enormous carved anthropoid sarcophagus which is empty-the lower half shaped to receive a coffin, the lid, a monolith weighing many tons is perched above it on stone built columns-the custodian suggested I climb on it to photograph the ceilings of beautifully carved hieroglyphic text from the Book of the Dead. For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Access I understand is now limited and is mostly closed. Little now remains of the building and it is now in a dangerous state of repair and although accessible should be taken with great care. Remains of some walls which include two floors with vaulted rooms possibly the kitchen and a dungeon can be easily seen from the clifftop as in this photograph. There is a signed carpark as you leave Portsoy and pass Sandend. From the carpark at the rear of farm buildings you pass a doocot on the left but continue on straight down towards the cliffs along a grass cut path and you will see the castle below you where there are seats and an information board. The name it is suggested might derive from the Norse Fyn is white and leitr for cliff, giving Fynleitr or Fynletyr whereas another suggestion is from the Gaelic with fionn for white and leitir for cliff both relating to the nature of the cliffs around this area exhibiting high deposits of quartz. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. Slains Castle Scotland UP704424JHP Slains Castle Cliffs Cruden Bay Aberdeenshire Coast Rocks Perched Sea Photo is a ruined mansion rather than true castle erected in 1597 by the Earl of Erroll now lies as a ruin on the cliffs just north of Cruden Bay although recent planning permission has been passed for it to be developed as apartments. It is famous as possible inspiration for the Dracula story written by Bram Stoker during one of his holidays to Cruden Bay. Land Army Memo bnm9959jhp Woman’s Land Army WLA Memorial Clochan village figures waving Buckie Moray Fochabers Crown Estate winter snow is situated just to the east of the village of Clochan, near Buckie, off the B9016 road from near Keith to Buckie on the North east Coast of Morayshire. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle. Cullen Beach vbn1290jhp Moray Coast Cullen Scotland autumn sea waves stack crow harbour blue sky sunshine on the Moray Firth in the North east of Scotland known for its lovely sandy beaches located between Banff and Nairn and first town in Morayshire travelling westwards through Aberdeenshire. The town is famous for it extended railway viaducts, a throw back to its heyday in Victorian times and also for Cullen Skink, a soup made with cream and smoked haddock. The rock stacks on its beach are known locally as the Three Kings.
