Bargaining is also part of the fun and is expected throughout so a new and often daunting experience for the traditional conservative British visitor. Better value can probably be obtained in Aswan or Luxor and certainly for those doing a Nile Cruise large, weighty or fragile items are best left to the last minute. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the southern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Ramesses 11 and his various military campaigns in Palestine, charging fortresses, cities, binding captives and the hall is viewed from his gate on this side. These photos are taken in dying evening light after a sandstorm so rather flat and golden subdued light but still gives sufficient shadow outline on the sunken carvings. Looking through the Hypostle Hall from the south gate of Ramesses 11 to the North gate where most of the outer wall reliefs are those of Seti 1. Karnak Two Obelisks EG075001jhp Ancient Egyptian Tuthmose Hatshepsut Granite Obelisks Karnak Temple Ramses gate is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. On the right is Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. The other obelisk is that of Tuthmose partially framed by the gate of Ramesses 1X viweed from the First Court at the rear of the Seventh Pylon. People going off to the right are heading for the Sacred Lake. Luxor West Bank EG947629jhp Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat. Howver the Court of Amenhotep is considered to one of the marvels of the Temple because of its scale, preservation and style and played a major part in the annual Opet Festival or Feast visited by Amun-Re of Karnak. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Saqqara Step Pyramid EG051128jhp Ancient Egyptian Step Pyramid Djoser Saqqara enclosure people scale southern aspect dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light. Tomb Ramasses IV EG017119JHP Entrance Corridor Painted People Tomb Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses Valley Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor, the ancient Egyptian capital city of Thebes and is a spectacular example of true majesty with scale, colour and elaborate craftsmanship carved out of solid rock. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Crathes June Border to2040029jhp Crathes Castle Gardens June Border visitors viewing summer sunny Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of the relayed borders in 2004 and probably the best display of flowers I have seen in the June border over the years. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Cullen Harbour vr0464jhp Cullen Harbour Wall Lighthouse Pier swimming people Bay Moray Firth coastline in the North east of Scotland known for its lovely sandy beaches located between Banff and Nairn and first town in Morayshire travelling westwards through Aberdeenshire. The town is famous for it extended railway viaducts, a throw back to its heyday in Victorian times and also for Cullen Skink, a soup made with cream and smoked haddock. The rock stacks on its beach are known locally as the Three Kings. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Queens View Deeside qax4223jhp Queen’s View marker viewpoint Tarland sightseers visitors Deeside early summer broom Aberdeenshire at the Deeside Field Club marker pointing out the alignment of all the hills visible from the viewpoint is on the road out of Tarland heading north and ultimately takes you east to Aberdeen in North east Scotland. The central outline is of the mountain called Lochnagar, fourth highest in Britain and the distinct hill on the right is that of Morven. Claimed as a favourite viewpoint of Royal Deeside for Queen Victoria and hence it being called the Queens View. In the centre of this photograph, not visible because of distance, is the small hill with the Bronze Age Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle built on it.
