Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Roman Mammisi eg075606jhp Dendara Temple Birth House Roman Trajan Hathor Horus ancient Egyptian located at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with scenes of Hathor suckling her son Ihy and another of him behind her with the King Trajan making offering to her and in the nearest panel the God Horus standing behind Hathor as Trajan makes his offering. Ptolemaic Temple Gods EG051839JHP Deir al-Madinah Workers Temple Amun Hathor Wall Painted Colours Carving Luxor is located on the West Bank of the River Nile and lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. This photo is taken on the interior wall showing how the pylon first looked including large flagged poles, the two obelisks and the seated statues of Ramasses including standing figures of the Pharaoh as well. One of the obelisks and some of standing figures have all been given away, mainly to France. Valley Kings EG0213057jhp Egypt Egyptian Tomb KV19 Prince Mentuherkhepshef hieroglyphics entrance reliefs was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. Fetternear House bnm6661jhp Fetternear House Kemnay ruin front coat arms panel carved Leslie Aberdeenshire Scotland shell towers front castellated historical building located near Kemnay near the River Don which was gutted by a fire in 1919 and has remained a shell ever since. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access.
