Karnak Sacred Lake EG074984jhp Ancient Egyptian Karnak Temple Sacred Lake South obelisks palm trees water in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall but the southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake. This lake was originally supplied with water through underground tunnels from the River Nile and would have fluctuated when the river flooded; these days the level remains the same through out the year. Priest’s houses have been found around the area the modern light show sitting is, there was a Nilometer and also an area for introducing the sacred geese. Accessed usually through the Gate of Ramesses 1X but is often approached from the walk back from the Festival Hall of Tuthmosis and the Gate of Nectanebo on the east of the Central Enclosure. The Church of St Nathalan dating from the late 1700’s possibly on an early site founded in 450AD by St Nathalan with records from the 12th Century indicating ownership to Arbroath Abbey. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. Inchdrewer Castle vbn0506jhp Inchdrewer Castle Banff Whitehills setting farmland crops summer panorama Scottish Aberdeenshire built in the mid-1500’s around 1542 as a traditional L-shaped tower house was destroyed by fire in 1713 on the death of George Ogilvy 3rd Lord of Banff, but rebuilt and a new round tower was added. Tenanted in the early 19th Century but derelict from 1836 and although partially restored to make weather tight has not been occupied since. A Listed in 1972. Ownership was initially by Currour’s, sold to Ogilvies of Dunlugas in 1557, later in 1803 Abercromby of Birkenbog inherited it, later sold to Count Mirrees and on his death sold to Olga Roh in 2013, former Russian model who has plans to renovate it as family home. Has been involved in Historic conflicts namely Royalists v Covenanters in 1640 and Jacobite Rebellion in 1746. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle will be Open again from 3rd May 2008; interior at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment.
