This gallery has photographs of the main sites North of Cairo, usually visited privately as not part of most Egyptian tours, and includes Heliopolis, Tell Basta near Zagazig and Tanis near the north coast of Egypt

A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one of the smaller municipal parks called Kom El-Dik or Dekka with some interesting and reasonably preserved Roman ruins and ongoing archaeology probably dating from 2nd C AD. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. A few isolated sites can be visited and one of the most famous, the Lighthouse or Pharos is no longer and would have been in the far distant horizon of this photo of the Eastern Harbour where an old military fort built by Sultan Qaitbay in 1480 is thought to have been built on its foundations. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. This photo is of the Abu al Abbas el Mursi Mosque in the Anfoushi district and the current form is from a refurbishment in 1945 by King Farouq and became the centre of Mosque Square, although built 1775 over the tomb a Spanish scholar and saint of the same name. Its current style is very much in the Arabian style popular when the Saint came to Egypt in the 13th Century. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, best known is Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. The track of the old Deeside Railway line from Aberdeen to Ballater, cut in the Beeching days, but is now part of the Deeside Way a public walk way which is nearly complete from the City to Ballater. Below this viewpoint heading west over a bridge is the famous statue of Rob Roy who is supposed to have leapt the Culter Burn from its rocky gorge cliffs and directly across down Millside Street is new housing scheme where once the Culter Papermill used to be located. Crathes Rhododendrons xvv817jhp Crathes Castle Gardens Rhododendrons Royal Deeside Scottish Aberdeenshire River Dee Scotland sets off this magnificent building which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Loch Kinord Islands TO813011jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scotland viewpoint crannog island prehistoric manmade Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken. There are two islands, one had a Castle constructed on it while the other is a Crannog, a prehistoric man made island. Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. This photograph was taken in 2004 using my first digital SLR, a Fuji S2 Pro with telephoto lens. River Dee Balmoral 199631jhp River Dee Royal Deeside Balmoral estate summer roadside Lochnagar mountain located in Aberdeenshire Scotland and viewed by the North Deeside Road from the roadside near to Balmoral Castle where this famous salmon fishing river passes amongst the trees. Looking westwards in the direction of Lochnagar, Scotland’s fourth highest mountain, its distinctive outline above the forest to left of centre horizon line. The road continues westwards towards Inver, Invercauld and eventually Braemar. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
