This photo is of the enclosure wall to the east of the main temple showing the scale and construction methods of the ancient egyptian builders with an example of pan bedding, the sloping land contour alignment of the brick layers. Karnak Unfinished Stele EG074857jhp Karnak Temple Egypt First Forecourt stele unfinished Amun plumed headdress by the remains of building ramps on the inside of the unfinished pylon entered from the west and this huge complex is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. Pan bedding was a technique where the bricks mirrored the ground levels and it is also possible to see how additons where made and other areas strengthened as seen towards the top centre. This part of the enclosure wall is at the northern corner and is behind the Open Air Museum. Luxor West Bank EG96720812jhp Egypt Luxor West Bank Qurna River Nile dates Hatshepsut crops green taken in 1994 so from near the ferry crossing at Qurna al-Gaddah which was the option in those days from getting across the Nile looking across this fertile plain to the Theban Hills and in the direction of Hatshepsut Temple. Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Greyhope Road, which begins at the seaward boundary of Torry and goes round the Nigg Bay headland to Girdleness Lighthouse, passes the Battery and Balnagask Golf Course. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
