In this photo is the crown like monument built by the Russian workmen in celebration of the completion of the project which they built in co-operation with the People of Egypt. The High Dam is often visited during a trip to the Unfinished Obelisk in a local quarry as a break from many other after the Philae island excursion with many trips offered on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Faience Bowl EG012619JHP Egyptian Museum Cairo pottery faience bowl blue fish motif painted in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. Luxor Carved Fish EG9620914JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Inside Exhibit Photo Slab Fish Christian Motif was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit of sandstone an example of early Christian Coptic Art maybe 6th Century AD is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. Fettercairn Distillery jkl7931jhp Fettercairn Mearns Aberdeenshire Scottish Distillery whisky winter white unicorn motif village situated on the flat rolling fertile farmlands of the Mearns and passed through most often by travellers leaving the main north trunk road to Aberdeen and cutting northwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Deeside. A barony from 1604 and busy market village although the Mercat Cross partly dating from 1670 and currently standing in the village square is probably a relic of past times from the nearby county town of Kincardine. A popular hotel the Ramsay Arms and a working Distillery with a visitor’s centre offer attractions to visitor and I personally remember photographing a Queen Victoria and Prince Albert lookalike starting the Victorian Trail promotion for the then Kincardine and Deeside District Council.
