Cothiemuir RSC bnm3616jhp Scotland summer sunny forest Cothiemuir Stone Circle recumbent rear view Keig Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age times. This ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Donside Inverurie 19209jhp Inverurie River Don Spring Daffodils Coldwells Burnhervie Donside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken from the Burnhervie Road at Coldwells looking westwards on the road past Fetternear either for Kemnay or continuing on to Monymusk crossing the River Don. Although the town is now bypassed for the main route north to Huntly and Inverness it is still the hub for one of the main routes north to Banff and is an expanding commuter location for Aberdeen itself with road and railway connections. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Bennachie Mid Mar 192710jhp Bennachie Mar Aberdeenshire Corsindae beech trees gean blossom spring Scottish rural taken from the roadside on the Corsindae road heading north from Mid-Mar near Echt, past the Kirk with its Standing Stones and very typical of an Aberdeenshire rural scene as the winter goes and spring colours start to appear but with field borders of mature beech trees still bare of leaves. Bennachie Hill to the west of Inverurie by the River Don is a distinctive landmark in central Aberdeenshire with its unusual peak man made with its partially vitrified Pictish fort remains and easily accessed from a visitors centre on the Chapel of Garioch road between Monymusk and Pitcaple. River Don Keig qax2684jhp River Don Scotland Castle Forbes summer road bridge view Donside Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland looking downstream where the river passes below Castle Forbes which can be seen up on top of the hill to the lefthand side or upstream westwards in the general direction of Keig and towards Strathdon and the Bridge of Alford. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
