A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather. Auldearn Doocot Spring UP280346jhp Scotland Nairnshire Moray Auldearn Doocot Dovecot pigeon loft spring yellow daffodils is situated in the village of Auldearn by the A96 near Nairn. The 17th Century Doocot or pigeon loft was bequeathed to the NTS by the owner Boath and is located on a motte, the site of a 12th century Royal Castle called Eren, one of the strongholds for the Scottish Kings of Moray. It was later destroyed but the site was the credited as where the Royal Standard was raised by the Marquis of Montrose in May 1645 when his army defeated the Covenant forces at the Battle of Auldearn. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London. The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
