Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.
Nubian Street Seller EG051534JHP Egyptian Aswan Nubian Village Woman Street Market Seller Lifestyle Ethnic in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. No model release form was obtrained or needed for using this photo in a public place. Model Boat EG012624JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit wooden model boats photo interior burial goods illustrating one of many grave goods in the form of model boats in this case to assist the deceased in the Afterlife here in the first floor of the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. The lidless sarcophagus in this photo is made in red Aswan granite as are the blocks making the tomblike chamber. Khufu Queens Chamber EG951054JHP Queen Chamber Great Pyramid Khufu Giza Ventilation Shafts Ba Passage was constructed of limestone and there is no evidence that any burial took place in it. This photo shows one of the so-called ventilation shafts which in recent years have been the centre of exploration using small robotic cameras finding the shaft ended with a small gate. Photographed in 1995 when restrictions were less strict but oh for a digital camera. No model release is required for the use of this photo. Luxor Tut Boats EG9620910JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Photo Tutankhamen Tut Model Sailing Boats Barks was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit is one of a few from the Tomb of King Tutankamun discovered by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings and shows model funerary barks intended to transport his soul from his tomb to Abydos and an important exhibit is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years. No model release is required for using this photo. To the south of the town is the famous and spectacular ruin of Dunnottar Castle. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. It treated TB patients, including w. Somerset Maugham, based upon the pine forest air and plenty of sunshine idea. It closed in 1928, was later a luxury hotel, commandeered by the Army during WW2, in 1948 the Red Cross used it for treatment of ex-servicemen and women with TB, had a short-lived revival during the 60’s Typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen and in 1955 became a convalescent home under the new NHS until it closed in 1998 when a hospital facility in modern purpose buildings was constructed. Loch Kinord Islands TO813011jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scotland viewpoint crannog island prehistoric manmade Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken. There are two islands, one had a Castle constructed on it while the other is a Crannog, a prehistoric man made island. Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. This photograph was taken in 2004 using my first digital SLR, a Fuji S2 Pro with telephoto lens.
