This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Started in the Late 13th century during the reign of King James with later additions during the mid 1500’s, it held a commanding position at the meeting of several Glens and a strategic position that kept it in use until abandonment in 1720. A quadrangular curtain wall of great proportion still remains as does some of a deep vertically side surrounding ditch which were all part of its substantial defences. One of the several attractions of this Highland town founded in 1817, centre of the whisky distillery country with seven distilleries surrounding it of which Glenfiddich is the best known, which is busy with visitors from around the world following the Malt Whisky Trail. Traverse Gun to Sea qwe8567jhp Fort George Cromarty Moray Firth view traverse gun sea fortress is located near Ardersier and the public access is organised by Historic Scotland although it is an active military base and here one of the unique traverse guns viewed from Duke of Cumberland's Bastion looking across to the Black Isle and Cromarty. A very large complex of moats, bastions and buildings with spectacular outlooks to the surrounding sea and countryside it is well preserved historical site and fine example of military construction and it should be as probably the most expensive military fortification built in the Britain. Completed in 1796 and in the context of Scottish history, it appears more a statement of political empowerment to thwart any ambitions of the Highlanders towards future sedition rather than dealing with any likely military threat.
