The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant relaxing visit with walks though tree covered paths, splashes of colourful flowers, wild birds and the occasional cat by places to sit and the usual rest house per this photo at the main disembarking area when the visit is completed. Bargaining is also part of the fun and is expected throughout so a new and often daunting experience for the traditional conservative British visitor. Better value can probably be obtained in Aswan or Luxor and certainly for those doing a Nile Cruise large, weighty or fragile items are best left to the last minute. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This is the North face of the pyramid with the entrance and the huge gash left by earlier more brutal attempts of accessing the burial chamber. Modern access is through the entrance in the course of unfinished granite blocks showing above the mound of soil. Karnak Ramesses 111 Temple EG0214079jhp Exterior wall Temple Ramesses 111 Karnak boats sails oars men many, on south side of the First Forecourt where it has been joined into the complex having once stood isolated near the Pylon. This photo is of the exterior walls at the east corner which is accessed either through the Bubastite Portal or walking back from Khonsu Temple or perhaps the Sacred Lake. It is now an integral part of the largest religious complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in Egypt but when first built would have been isolated as the first pylon of Nectanebo was constructed later. Ramesses 111 Temple was a barque shrine dedicated to Amun in his two most recognised forms, Amun-Re and Amun-re-Kamutef, King of the Gods and Karnak and who is before the harim. On the exterior walls on its western face it has a large scale scene of many boats as they might have been seen during the annual river procession along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak. Karnak Amenhotep 11 Temple EG075038jhp Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1. Luxor Menna Tomb EG006730jhp Egyptian Thebes Tombs Nobles Menna Marshland scene boat fishing fish water is one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. The Menna Tomb-Chapel is cruciform in design located in the Upper Enclosure [Tomb 69] was a Scribe of the Royal Fields during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tombs of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I was taken immediately by the colourful painted reliefs, difficult to photograph as protected by Perspex sheeting and only lit by reflected light done by the custodians. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Visits to these tombs tend to be privately organised rather than being part of a package tour but it is easily organised with a taxi from the East Bank hotels, payment for selected tombs is made at the ticket office beforehand near the Colossi of Memnon with the area being very close to the ticket office. Photography certainly the last time I was in Egypt in 2007 had been banned in all the tombs so these photos although not very good technically are useful as a record of the nature of the tombs and especially their paintings. These images have not been sharpened during post production but will benefit from some USM sharpening prior to use. Hand held as no tripods were allowed and using slide film, Fuji 400asa, did not give great leeway to get decent photos, oh for my Nikon DSLR with 6400ISO. The hand reflected lighting used in some tombs causes a hot spot and nothing by way of a balanced light but it is daylight balanced. However being direct sunlight reflected off tin foil would probably being doing more damage to the paintings than a suitable wide angle flash with UV filter. Given that most of the paints used in these tombs is mineral based then actually either method would do no measurable damage. The Perspex sheeting, however inconvenient, is to stop the physical touching of the paintings accidentally or otherwise, by inquisitive hands or swinging backpacks, and is absolutely vital protection to preserve these invaluable unique irreplaceable paintings. Some of the obvious damage to the paintings is not all modern, as his eyes have been gouged out possibly by an enemy in ancient times. The Menna Tomb-Chapel is cruciform in design located in the Upper Enclosure [Tomb 69] was a Scribe of the Royal Fields during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tombs of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I was taken immediately by the colourful painted reliefs, difficult to photograph as protected by Perspex sheeting and only lit by reflected light done by the custodians. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Visits to these tombs tend to be privately organised rather than being part of a package tour but it is easily organised with a taxi from the East Bank hotels, payment for selected tombs is made at the ticket office beforehand near the Colossi of Memnon with the area being very close to the ticket office. Photography certainly the last time I was in Egypt in 2007 had been banned in all the tombs so these photos although not very good technically are useful as a record of the nature of the tombs and especially their paintings. These images have not been sharpened during post production but will benefit from some USM sharpening prior to use. Hand held as no tripods were allowed and using slide film, Fuji 400asa, did not give great leeway to get decent photos, oh for my Nikon DSLR with 6400ISO. The hand reflected lighting used in some tombs causes a hot spot and nothing by way of a balanced light but it is daylight balanced. However being direct sunlight reflected off tin foil would probably being doing more damage to the paintings than a suitable wide angle flash with UV filter. Given that most of the paints used in these tombs is mineral based then actually either method would do no measurable damage. The Perspex sheeting, however inconvenient, is to stop the physical touching of the paintings accidentally or otherwise, by inquisitive hands or swinging backpacks, and is absolutely vital protection to preserve these invaluable unique irreplaceable paintings. This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. Broomend of Crichie Henge TO187055JHP Broomend Crichie Henge Stones Monoliths Pictish Symbol Stone Aberdeenshire Inverurie is located to the south of Inverurie above the River Don and is part of large late neolithic ceremonial centre now mostly destroyed. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather. The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence. Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations. Corgarff Battlements VS2677JHP Corgarff Castle Autumn Battlements Aberdeenshire Historic Scotland fortified fort Lecht just off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
