Aurora 7Mar94 ab94631jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland Deeside westwards tree winter display green nitrogen gas rays arc Aberdeenshire taken on the 7th March, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from west to north with Cassiopeia lying to the right top. This was the best of seven nights in a row of displays during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RDP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. What was unusual about this display was the very distinct folding of the arc giving a distinct curtain effect from the many moving rays, the green colours being from low altitude oxygen ionisation around 20.00hrs GMT. This photo was used as the cover image for The Aurora, a book published by me in 1997, now sadly out of print but still avaiable on the second hand market. Nubian Street Seller EG051534JHP Egyptian Aswan Nubian Village Woman Street Market Seller Lifestyle Ethnic in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. No model release form was obtrained or needed for using this photo in a public place. This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Philae InfR EG982425jhp Philae Egypt Aswan visit tourist market souk goods infra red B&W near the jetty for boarding motorboats for the visit to the relocated site established late in the history of Egypt being mainly Ptolemaic, eventually closing as a religious site around 550AD and being located on an island had remained remarkably untouched. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites. This particular photograph was taken during a Stars and Signs trip using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Buckie Harbour vr0572jhp Buckie Morayshire summer Moray Scotland North East coast harbour RNLI lifeboat anchored is one of the largest Morayshire towns facing Moray Firth on the northern coast of North East Scotland with small operational fishing harbour, fish market, boat building and featured on the Fishing heritage Trail. Made up of several distinct communities it extends some 3 miles along the coast but is never more than 1 mile inland and as it never actually touches the busy A98 main coast road it remains a quieter than normal town. An earlier small harbour at Buckpool, dating from 1857, but rapidly became outdated and now on longer exists but the more modern Cluny harbour dating from 1880 still operates and is one of the finest on the North East Coast. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
