These photos were taken through the roadside railings as cameras were banned then and that probably applies today as well. Unlike the British Museum in London where photography is allowed and even flash can be used, the Egyptian Museum and many others throughout the country have a total ban on photography and the reason being probably more to do with managing the huge crowds than one would hope is not to do with selfishness or the usual damaged caused by flash syndrome, a total red herring if ever there was one. Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days. It used to be a long run through the centre of Cairo after landing usually around midnight and no great fun to eventually get to bed around 2am to rise again for the first day’s excursion usually starting at 8am. Today a circular road around Cairo means much shorter transfer times but if you can manage to go out a day earlier and have a first day with sleep in time and a relaxing start to what can be a very hectic schedule. It is easy to take a taxi from the hotel to the Pyramids and have a leisurely look by oneself prior to doing the more concentrated guided package trips. The hotel is on one level and set in well established gardens and with a cool feel to the atmosphere surrounding the secluded rooms. These photographs show the type of arrangement there is of paths all leading to the swimming pool, some pool side restaurants and the main reception dining room area. There is some limited shop facilities and a bank. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. Karnak Sacred Lake EG074984jhp Ancient Egyptian Karnak Temple Sacred Lake South obelisks palm trees water in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall but the southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake. This lake was originally supplied with water through underground tunnels from the River Nile and would have fluctuated when the river flooded; these days the level remains the same through out the year. Priest’s houses have been found around the area the modern light show sitting is, there was a Nilometer and also an area for introducing the sacred geese. Accessed usually through the Gate of Ramesses 1X but is often approached from the walk back from the Festival Hall of Tuthmosis and the Gate of Nectanebo on the east of the Central Enclosure. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one of the smaller municipal parks called Kom El-Dik or Dekka with some interesting and reasonably preserved Roman ruins and ongoing archaeology probably dating from 2nd C AD. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. Definitely need a great taxi driver who can navigate his way to these outlying sites, finding the local custodian and also managing not to get bogged down in the sand once away from the plantations. Cabrach Burning jkl9493jhp Cabrach moor heather burning smoke Aberdeenshire Scottish grouse spring land management located in one of the bleakest landscapes especially during a nasty winter day in western Aberdeenshire. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown.
