Once a royal stronghold in medieval Scotland, its dates from around 1390 and is one of the finest examples of the Scottish Baronial style. A tradition throughout its ruling families means there are five towers for each family and sumptuous interiors from the 13th century to the Edwardian era are all on show. Landscaped parkland and a redeveloped 18th century walled garden as also on offer. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn.
