Aswan Nubian Coffin Texts EG052940JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Coffin Texts inside sarcophagus of Heketa found at rock cut tomb at Kubbet el Hawa and dating to 12th Dynasty, an exhibit inside modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Tut 2nd Coffin EG11727JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit face mask second gilded sarcophagus Tutankhamun photo in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Giza Boat Pit EG076633JHP Solar Boat Museum Giza Boat Pit Stone Roof Slabs Burial Goods is housed in an air-conditioned custom built building on the south face of the Great Pyramid of the Pharaoh Khufu over the boatpit in which this reassembled kit sailing boat from around 2500BC was discovered in the 1950’s. During construction analysis of the mud found on the wood sections suggests it sailed on the River Nile; the sections are tied together and it measures 43 metres long. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza. Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512114jhp Egypt Egyptian Abu Sir drainage channels granite stone covers lids Sahure near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

The so-called Persian Shaft was for officials of the Pharaoh, possibly Ahmose 11 c530BC, 26th Dynasty, from the First Persian period, some 2000 years after the Step Pyramid was built. Entered by a wrought iron spiral staircase down a vertical shaft of some 20-25mm depth, three tombs are entered by small horizontal shafts. One tomb that of Psamtik, a royal chief physician still has an enormous carved anthropoid sarcophagus which is empty-the lower half shaped to receive a coffin, the lid, a monolith weighing many tons is perched above it on stone built columns-the custodian suggested I climb on it to photograph the ceilings of beautifully carved hieroglyphic text from the Book of the Dead. For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Access I understand is now limited and is mostly closed. Saqqara Ti Sarcophagus 6867EG07JHP Sarcophagus Ti Burial Chamber Mastaba Tomb Granite Lid Saqqara Egypt Interior, overseer for the building of Sun Temples at nearby Abusir for the Pharaohs Neferikare and Niuserre of the 5th Dynasty c 2498-2345BC, is on the far edge of the north Saqqara necropolis and is reached by a walk past statues of three Greek Philosophers. It is fine example of the later style of the evolution of the mastaba tomb with a pillared portico, courtyard, burial shaft and a room with Ti’s replica statue viewed through a hole in similar fashion to the serdab of King Doser by the Step Pyramid. Auchindoir Church asd7285jhp St Mary's Church Auchindoir Cabrach Aberdeenshire summer Scotland tombstones ruin romantic is reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This is the entrance approach to the ruin through the array of old tombstones. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with a fine elaborately carved and detailed Scottish medieval door and inside it has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. The backdrop is the spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees. The church and the area where originally called Aberchirder and the congregation were the catalyst for the Disruption of 1834, a major schism in the Scottish Church of the time. Only a gable of the old church remains in the kirkyard and although an active cemetery it does have some interesting historically important ruined tombs and mausoleums including an excellent example of a watchtower dating from 1831, built during the time of body snatching for medical research rife throughout Scotland.
