Knockespock View asd7042jhp Suie Hill viewpoint Tap O’Noth fence lichen Knockespock Aberdeenshire Scotland a spectacular view north westwards lying between Alford and Huntly. This viewpoint is accessed from the Bridge of Alford to Montgarrie and takes you over the Correen Hills by Suie Hill to Clatt and onto the Alford Huntly road near Rhynie. The distinctive shape of the Tap O’Noth hill with its vitrified Pictish fort remains on the top. Knockespock House is the large mansion that lies directly beneath this viewpoint. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Hindrum Hill to3468036jhp Summer broom yellow blossom Hindrum Hill Torphins stones lichen fields Deeside Aberdeenshire, is a pleasant country road between Torphins and Kincardine O'Neil located west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. About a mid way along is a rough farm track that goes to Hindrum Farm past a hill on which cattle graze but in early summer is covered with broom blossom and the white flowers of gean and hawthorn trees. There are views to the east and south to Ord Fundlie and Beltie hills as well as Torphins, Craigmyle, the Hill of Fare and Glassel. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. Subsequently handed to Sir John Gordon but was abandoned in 1600 and fell in ruin by 1638 never to be repaired again. It is located on a steep buff below rugged and almost inaccessible cliffs just north west of Sandend near Portsoy on the northern coast of Aberdeenshire facing the Moray Firth. There was an original fortress on the site dating back to before 1246 when records indicate that it was to be fortified during the reign of King Alexander 111 to fend off attacks by the Vikings although it was subsequently captured by them. The Ogilvie’s had lost interest in Findlater Castle after they decided to build Cullen House a somewhat different elegant mansion close to Cullen. Once there was a wooden bridge giving access to the castle after a steep descent down the cliffs. Little now remains of the building and it is now in a dangerous state of repair and although accessible should be taken with great care. Remains of some walls which include two floors with vaulted rooms possibly the kitchen and a dungeon can be easily seen from the clifftop as in this photograph. There is a signed carpark as you leave Portsoy and pass Sandend. From the carpark at the rear of farm buildings you pass a doocot on the left but continue on straight down towards the cliffs along a grass cut path and you will see the castle below you where there are seats and an information board. The name it is suggested might derive from the Norse Fyn is white and leitr for cliff, giving Fynleitr or Fynletyr whereas another suggestion is from the Gaelic with fionn for white and leitir for cliff both relating to the nature of the cliffs around this area exhibiting high deposits of quartz. Glas-allt Sheil Waterfall to4300392jhp Muick Scotland autumn Royal Lodge Cairn Glas-allt-Shiel waterfall on the western shore of to the south of Ballater in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and in this case passing the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel surrounded by forest with the highest peak of the Broad Cairn reached by walking up to and past the huge cliff face of the Dubh Loch. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. Glenbuchat Spring asd6497jhp Glenbuchat Ben Newe summit rocks lichen rural spring Scottish Aberdeenshire looking northwards across this charming glen is accessed off the A939/A944/A97 Ballater/Huntly road just at the entrance to a Historic Scotland maintained castle by the same name. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet.
