Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

This was viewed with a full moon behind so it has a subdued colour balance to it but very accurate of what the human eye would have seen; looking Westwards. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm Nikkor Wide angle manual lens at f5.6 aperture, ISO setting of 6400 for 10 seconds. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving. Clouds increased and displays during the rest of the evening were not seen. I use the older manual lenses as they are much easier to set at Infinity, modern zoom lenses are harder to focus on infinity especially in very dark conditions. No additional filters are added. As the photo shows it was completely obscured by dense cloud cover with a few gaps-enough to see some light. It then went 100% covered and despite a power display in progress nothing could be seen. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a Tokina SD zoom at f5.6 aperture, ISO setting of 6400 for 10 seconds. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving. Clouds increased and displays during the rest of the evening were not seen. This summer double rainbow occurred on the late afternoon of 29th August, 2023 at 17.57BST from a rain shower passing over. Camera used was a Nikon D700 FX body with 16-35mm zoom lens at 16mm focal length, ISO 200 at f11 aperture with 1/320sec exposure. The shapes, size and colours make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a reflection of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible as well as the photographer. This was taken from Ord Fundlie hillside by Crooktree farm track north of Kincardine O’Neil, looking across to the Hill of Fare and Torphins. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond.
