Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum seated Menthuhotep-Aa, beloved of Satis, Lady of Elephantine, a quartzite statue from the First Intermediate period and an exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons.

Kom Ombo Temple Egypt hieroglyphs carvings blocks Wadjet Nekhet snake vulture of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols.

Egyptian Luxor West Bank Thebes Valley Queens approach querns hills rocks is the lesser known and visited burial necropolis on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in which some Royal burials of this ancient civilisation of Pharaohs wives are contained as well as wives of important officials. Certainly one of the most beautiful is that of Queen Nefertari [66], restored by the Getty Institute and is not always open. Entry is by limited special permission and substantial entrance fee. I did have the chance to see it for a very limited time and of course no photography was allowed but it was an awesome experience, almost akin to be being in a Disney cartoon rich in colour. The usual tombs visited on a package visit are Queem Tyti [52], Prince Amun-hir-Khopshef [55] and Prince Kha’emweset [44].

Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This photo was taken during a visit in November 1998 with a Stars and Signs Tour and is of the eastern gate, the usual point of entry for visitors. The upper chambers of this high gate were where the Pharaoh Ramesses 111 is thought to have had private rooms to retreat to, maybe with ladies of his harem, when visiting the Temple and might have been where there was an attempt on his life.

I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh

The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh.

Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden.

Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Aviary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden.
