Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Alabaster Container EG11712JHP Egyptian Museum Cairo Exhibit alabaster perfume container Tutankhamun burial chamber in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Painted Hieroglyphs EG051917JHP Temple Merenptah Wall Carvings Hieroglyphs Djed Pillar Tiet Isis Knot Symbols who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Luxor Amun Statue EG962090JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Inside Exhibit Amun Statue Tutankhamun Isis Knot was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit was found in the Karnak Cachette and celebrates the Young Kings return to the Theban Gods fold after the destruction of Amarna and his father Akhenaten is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. Luxor Temple is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues at the entrance to the first pylon. Facing the pylon is the long Avenue of Sphinxes attributed to Nectanebo 1 which went completed would have joined up with Karnak Temple and recent reclamation work had established much of this avenue running through the town. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Kinord Cross Slab xvv2526jhp Loch Kinord Scottish Celtic Cross Cross-slab Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with vistors centre and public toilets while on the loch is a Crannog, prehistoric man made island and Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. The cross slab dates from around 9th Century AD and stands near to its original location on the north shore overlooking the loch. It stands 23 feet high, the tallest such medieval sculpture in Scotland and the 7.6 ton sandstone slab is decorated with warriors, war scenes, the vanquished corpses, animals and Celtic interlaced spiral knotwork. It has been covered in this huge Perspex canopy to stop the weathering that is caused by modern acid rain.
