Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Abydos Ramesses 11 Temple Painting 5415EG07JHP Abydos Small Temple Ramesses 11 prisoners reliefs kneeling tied bound is a 10 minute walk to the NW of the main Sety 1 Temple at Abydos and although much smaller and completely uncovered, it is worth the walk and effort to see it for there are many high quality colorful painted reliefs which are easily accessible and a joy to behold. Probably covered as late as the Napoleonic exploration means the sun and exposure to the elements has not had long enough to destroy the colours completely something that will eventually happen. These are iconic images of prisoners relating to the Battle of Kadesh and his victory story so beloved of Ramesses. Karnak Fallen Obelisk EG074979jhp Egypt Queen Hatshepsut Granite Obelisk Pyramidion Amun Cartouche Maatkare Karnak Temple is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as she kneels at the feet of Amun with her cartouche on the left shwoing her throne name Maatkare. Karnak The White Chapel EG074912jhp Egypt Luxor Karnak White Chapel Senusret figure offering wine kneeling was one of the original and stars of the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. As the oldest reconstruction at the site, dating from around 1970 -26 BC, testifies to one of the richest periods of craftsmanship in ancient Egypt, achieved perhaps because of the stability of his reign of over 30 years and is considered the peak of craftsmanship in the 12th Dynasty shown in some exquisite examples of jewellery found at Dashur. This area is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel and another from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Seti 1 Temple EG053391JHP Egyptian Temple Sethos Carving Horus Offering Lotus Interior Photograph on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in an area called al-Tarif turning off eastwards instead of taking the Valley of the Kings road. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952 and this painting is in the righthand niche next to the more famous mummy on bed scene which faces the entrance. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.
