This is one of those busy back roads from Deeside to Airport joining the main A96 Inverness to Aberdeen road which always seems to have some of worst potholing and road surface of any road in the Shire. This view is from Quarrybrae just above the Tertowie Clinterty junction. Donside Towie up481672jhp Donside River Don Chapel Towie Aberdeenshire Scottish summer broom clouds yellow blossom an attractive part of Upper Donside between the Muir of Fowlis and Towie looking across the farmland by the River Don towards Strathdon. This is taken from the back road running to the south of the River from the Hillockhead/Chapel of Towie heading east to Milltown of Towie village itself and eventually crossing the River Don at Glenkindie. This is one of my favourite views of the river although the broom has seen better days. Bellabeg Lost wyy6103jhp Bellabeg motte Lost roadsign famous stolen Strathdon Scotland summer farm querky scene just to the west of Bellabeg village crossing the Nochty road bridge by the Spar Grocery store from the main Strathdon road. This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Sadly a new agricultural barn has been constructed which desecrates the once open rural vista from this site and says little for the quality of planning controls and the care of a countryside so dependent on tourism. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen. The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. River Deveron Marnoch TO4350626JHP River Deveron Autumnal Scenery Stock Library Photo Marnoch Kirkton Cemetery south of Banff in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland. The church and the area where originally called Aberchirder and the congregation were the catalyst for the Disruption of 1834, a major schism in the Scottish Church of the time. Only a gable of the old church remains in the kirkyard and although an active cemetery it does have some interesting historically important ruined tombs and mausoleums including an excellent example of a watchtower dating from 1831, built during the time of body snatching for medical research rife throughout Scotland.
