There is a crannog in Loch Kinord. Generally dating from 2nd century BC through to 3rd Century AD little in the way of artefacts has ever been found. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Loch Kinord Islands TO813011jhp Loch Kinord Deeside Scotland viewpoint crannog island prehistoric manmade Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with visitors centre and public toilets with a viewpoint of the Loch from which this photo was taken. There are two islands, one had a Castle constructed on it while the other is a Crannog, a prehistoric man made island. Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. This photograph was taken in 2004 using my first digital SLR, a Fuji S2 Pro with telephoto lens. This area offers a colourful carpet in late summer and early autumn and one of the attractive features for visitors travelling westwards along the North Deeside Road to Braemar. Off to the right of this viewpoint is Morven Hill and below it a popular visitor attraction at the Burn O’Vat accessed by the Huntly road a few hundred yards on the right. Deeside AA Box zxc0030jhp AA Telephone Box Cambus O’May Royal Deeside Scottish spring sunshine is passed after Loch Kinord on the North Deeside Road from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar after the town of Aboyne and before reaching Ballater and just past the Burn O’Vat Huntly junction. Now restored in its distinctive black and yellow livery it is kept as a small museum and still remains an iconic reminder of the early days of motoring before mobile phones when a stranded motorist and member of the AA could telephone for help. A key was supplied as part of the membership pack and allowed access to these distinct roadside boxes throughout the UK.
