Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.
Aswan Aga Khan EG949027jhp
Egyptian Aswan river Nile Aga Khan Mausoleum start steps elegant beautiful and a visit is often a part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat. The Mausoleum is for the Third Aga Khan who died in 1957 built by his widow his Begum or former wife and is in solid marble. The current Aga Kahn, his grandson Karim, is the leader of the Shi i Sect of Ismaili Muslims. The Tomb is occasionally open but usually a visit entails a climb by steps and apart from a close view of this beautiful building offers wonderful view over Aswan and the River Nile.

Diorite Khafre EG11824JHP
Egyptian Museum Cairo Exhibit Pharaoh Khafre ground floor inside photograph in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Khafre Khufu Pyramids Egypt Giza tombs limestone desert sand foreground, the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the southern face showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top and in the distance on the right the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

Sphinx Khafre Giza EG02028jhp
Giza Egyptian Sphinx Khafre Chephren Pyramid Temple walls limestone blocks frame this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple.

Blackhall Castle Gates xvv1200jhp
Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003.
