Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Osiris Chapel 5586EG07JHP Dendara Temple Osiris Chapel small roof ceiling opening interior photograph at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of The Chapels of Osiris on the roof of the temple and in the western one it shows Osiris floating in the only source of light; a visit to the roof also gives wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The tomb-chapel illustrated is the rear of that of Petosiris, a High Priest of Thoth dating to around 300BC. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Tanis Osiris Relief 1332EG05jhp Tanis Ancient Egyptian Royal tomb Sheshonq Osiris rising rays reliefs located site to side of main and famous Royal Tomb of Psusennes which was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. Tanis was once held to be the capital created by Ramses, now thought to be in the Quantir area but it was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. The site has a Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop.
