This ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Picardy Pictish Stone VQ9132JHP Picardy Pictish Symbol Stone Incised Carved Ancient Scottish Pillar Insch Aberdeenshire dates from the 6/7th century AD and stands in a field off minor road to Largie near Insch in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland. A rough whinstone pillar with three finely incised prehistoric Pictish symbols of double disc and Z-rod, coiled serpent and simple mirror. It is apparently in its original position; near a burial and in view of the nearby hill fort of Dunnideer. Bluebells Leith Hall VQ9022JHP Leith Hall Springtime Spring Bluebells Flowers Trees Gardens Aberdeenshire Scotland alongside the entrance road at one of the less well known Aberdeenshire Trust properties but is an attractive homely Scottish mansion of the Leith-Hay family evolving over 300 years from 1650 until the mid-20th century. All the families’ furniture and paintings are part of the property along with an extensive walled garden and marked walkways are open throughout the year although building is only opened for a short season as of 2010. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Dunnideer Auchleven Road fgh6979jhp Dunnideer Hillfort Castle fort arch Insch Aberdeenshire Scotland autumn Whitehouse road ancient ruin hilltop is a prehistoric site but the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. This autumnal view from the B992 Insch to Whitehouse road south and which passes through the village of Auchleven. River Don Keig qax2684jhp River Don Scotland Castle Forbes summer road bridge view Donside Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland looking downstream where the river passes below Castle Forbes which can be seen up on top of the hill to the lefthand side or upstream westwards in the general direction of Keig and towards Strathdon and the Bridge of Alford. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
