Standing in its centre it is easy to imagine being in the symbolic creation of the original papyrus marsh. It is a temple not usually visited on the standard River Nile cruise tour package but used to be accessible if berthed alongside the town with a long delay to get through old single lock system expected as it is only a short walk from the waterfront; probably not so realistic these days. The figure is standing looking into the inner sanctum, the Granite Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus who ruled briefly after the death of Alexander the Great. The obelisk is that of Hatshepsut while the smaller one on the left is that of Thutmosis 1. The distant view goes beyond the Processional Way of the Hypostyle hall, through the western Pylon, over the River Nile to the distant west bank Theban hills. This photograph is near the four papyrus bud columns on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum at the entrance door into the court and towards the Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus. The two standing red snadstone figures are the God Amun and his consort based at Karnak called Amunet or Amaunet. These statues were destroyed in antiquity for certainly that of Amauet was thought lost for ever but pieces have been retrieved in both cases and the statues partially restored. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose 111 leading to the central court area but this outer wall has important offering scnes and texts relating to Tuthmose's military campaigns into Syria and Palestine. Captured on this wall is Tuthmose offering gists to Amun such as two obelisks which had their pyramidions coverd in electrum but were eventually removed. This wall is described as the Palace of Ma'at on the UCLA Karnak website but not mentioned as such in either the Blue Book, Murnane or the touregypt sites. Just visible is the top of the obleisk of Hatshepsut. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

For me it has some of the loveliest intact columns, with great attention of the detail and still a hint of colour from the bottom to the top of these huge floral capitals where the craftsmanship leaps off every surface. Standing in its centre it is easy to imagine being in the symbolic creation of the original papyrus marsh. It is a temple not usually visited on the standard River Nile cruise tour package but used to be accessible if berthed alongside the town with a long delay to get through old single lock system expected as it is only a short walk from the waterfront; probably not so realistic these days. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. Auchindoun Castle vs2362jhp Auchindoun Castle ruined fort inner walls keep stonework huge Scottish prominent hilltop Dufftown Morayshire Scotland autumn walk fence fort with excellent views over Glen and the River Fiddich is located on a possible earlier Iron Age earthwork, built in the mid-1400's as a traditional L-shaped tower house was the centre of many clan feuds and much violence, burnt, restored and abandoned by 1725 now remains an eye catching Historic Scotland property on the Cabrach to Dufftown road, NJ 349 375. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. In the distance are a symbol of modern Scotland, the relentess encroachment of wind turbines-wonder if they will be around in 2000 years time.
