Not long after leaving the public road heading for the Fungle it is possible to see Birse Castle on your right. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and passing the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel on the western shore surrounded by a small forest with the highest peak of the Broad Cairn reached by walking up to and past the huge cliff face of the Dubh Loch. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. The Spital is also the starting off point for the walk to Lochnagar Mountain via the Gelder and Saddle.
