This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Karnak InfR EG983730jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian statue headless inra red ghostlike B&W film Sanctuary central court festival hall Thutmose near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is looking back into the main area of the temple from the central court area, now a large open space in front of unusual Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The figure is standing looking into the inner sanctum, the Granite Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus who ruled briefly after the death of Alexander the Great. The obelisk is that of Hatshepsut while the smaller one on the left is that of Thutmosis 1. The distant view goes beyond the Processional Way of the Hypostyle hall, through the western Pylon, over the River Nile to the distant west bank Theban hills. In the foreground are the truncated columns of an area which was one of the oldest areas of Karnak. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Luxor Karnak Temple EG962004jhp Karnak Temple Eighth Pylon Seated Statues south face wire equipment front damaged located on the transverse axis south from the main central area in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is of the Eighth Pylon with its southern face dominated by five colossal figures from Amenhotep 1, the most complete and Amenhotep 11 while the two either side of the doorway are of Tuthmosis 11 and all were later restored by Tuthmosis 111 although all are now in very poor condition. The pylon was originally raised by Hatshepsut but subsequently her identity was removed as was the name of Amun which offended the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten but later restored by Seti 1. The area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. Karnak temple Ptah EG0214004jhp Temple Chapel Ptah headless state Karnak Egyptian vestibule Triad Memphis which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a delightful small temple and very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are the broken granite states of Ptah which is illustrated in this photo and Sekhmet in the righthand sanctuary. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Headless Statue EG074953jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Festival Hall Thutmosis Tuthmose statue Akhmenu near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is near the four papyrus bud columns on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. Karnak Tenth Pylon EG075008jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Tenth Pylon Horemheb enclosure walls gate Statues Mut located on the south western enclosure wall the tenth pylon and gate built by Horemheb leads to the Precinct of Mut which is not open to the public. The Karnak complex is locaqtedd near the Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of the pylon is from within the central enclosure obscured by this stand opf palm trees but one of two standing, headless statues, probably of Horemheb, is visible on the left. the state of the pylon is in very poor repair, many of the blocks are infill reused from other older buildings and once these are identified and removed, reconstruction will start on this pylon and gate.
