Left to right there is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Turah limestone capped Khafre Pyramid and to the right the smaller of the three, that of Menkaure with its distinctive three small Queen's pyramids by its side. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Karnak Temple Sandstorm EG0214013jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel gate sandstorm dramatic light hypostyle palms hazy which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Busy in th early morning with coach and aircraft tours arriving from Aswan and Luxor. For cruiseboat tours a quiet period is often around 10.30am and is the time for the best light on the facade - afternoon visits mean the front is in the shade. Luxor Nile EG20367jhp Egyptian Luxor Hotels St George River Winter Palace Nile ferry boat crossing and this was the manner of crossing to the West bank from the cruiseboats and hotels in Luxor proper. The road bridge over the Nile slightly to the south of the town was opened in 1998 and then all journeys to the West Bank sites was done by coach and much less romantic than crossing the Nile by ferry boat. It is still possible to use the public ferry and then get a taxi from the ticket office near Qurna al-Gaddah. In 1994 on my first trip I stayed in the Etap Hotel now the Mercure and it was a great location on the promenade, great views over the River with easy access by foot to the Luxor Museum, to public ferry points for crossing the Nile and to nearby shops or just enjoyed a leisurely walk along the tree lined waterfront by the berthed cruiseboats and feluccas. You could see the Temple of Hatshepsut tucked into the Theban hills, watch the balloons starting their early morning flights or see feluccas and cruiseboats sailing along the Nile. In my first few visits to Egypt but especially my first the Nile cruiseboat the RA 11 anchored adjacent to the main promenade and we were collected in the morning by ferryboats and taken over the river to the East Boat and brought back after our visits to the West Bank sites. Coaches were waiting on the West Bank to take us to the sites. This was my first visit to Luxor and I was lucky to get changed to a room in the north wing which was considerably quieter than one in the centre of the hotel above the swimming pool, various restaurants and a dance floor. It also offered great views to the West Bank and in this case two hot air balloons starting their trips over the West Bank. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Abu Ghurab & Abusir EG02AA34jhp Egypt Abu Ghurab Sun Temple Nyuserre Solar Abu Sir pyramids ruined desert isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area.
